The summer program of the Rome Opera House is enriched by one of the most famous ballets of the 19th century, Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij's Swan Lake. Under the direction of Andriy Yurkevych, the choreography of Benjamin Pech harmonizes perfectly with the elegant decorations by set designer Aldo Buti and the lighting by Vinicio Cheli.
Performed for the first time at the Bol'šoj Theater in Moscow in February 1877 to a libretto by Vladimir Petrovic Begičev, the ballet is based on an ancient German fairy tale, Der geraubte Schleier (The Stolen Veil), reworked by the writer Jophann Karl August Musäus .
Although there are several versions of this ballet, most dance companies base their staging for the choreography on Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's version first presented in 1895 at the Mariinsky Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg.
The ballet, still today, continues to fascinate for the almost magical and nocturnal atmospheres that accompany the appearance of the protagonist Odette, and for the ambivalent role of the latter of Odette-Odile, White Swan and Black Swan, which represents the two forces of Good and Evil facing each other.
The étoiles Alessandra Amato and Rebecca Bianchi, the first dancers Susanna Salvi and Claudio Cocino are able to interpret their roles masterfully, together with other international artists: the prima ballerina of the Het Nationale Ballet of Amsterdam Maia Makhateli, the principal dancer of the Bol'šoj of Moscow Semyon Chudin and the Paris Opera étoile Germain Louvet.
